The Salar de Uyuni comprises over 12,000 square kilometer in the Potosi region and the salt is over 10 meters thick in the center. It is estimated that over ten billion tons of salt were reserved in the Salar de Uyuni. Because of the collections of different minerals that excess from the surrounding mountains, many fluorescent-colored lakes were created.
Going back to the history some 40,000 years ago, the region was covered by the giant salt lake Minchin but at some point the lake dried, so only two small lakes were left behinds (the Poopó and Uri Uri) and additional two salt lakes, the Coipasa and Uyuni.
Salar de Uyuni has an average annual temperature between 20 degrees Celsius and negative 25 degrees Celsius in winter. During the dry season from the month of July to November, the salt bed is very dry and it covers with thin sheer of water that is passable by the tourists’ automobile.
